SSIS Project Intermediate Concepts Including Tips and Tricks – Travis Nagler

For the SQL Server-based Database Programmer, the ETL software of choice is SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS). Data warehousing and reporting systems rely on the accurate, relevant, and speedy movement and translation of data. SSIS is an important tool in getting this work completed. In this session, in order to level-set, we will briefly discuss the creation of a simple ETL project, including packages, tasks, connections, parameters, and variables. Moving forward, we will go into more intermediate concepts including additional tasks to look up keys, add new columns, create validation, use expressions, use temp tables, and use file system operations. Lastly, we will go over some tips and tricks for making sure the SSIS projects you create save you time and work.

Travis Nagler works as a Senior Data Warehouse Programmer with Sutter Health’s Sutter Shared Services Division. During his 21 years of experience in IT, he has worked as a web programmer, systems administrator, database administrator, and database programmer in Oracle, SQL Server, and Apache environments. He earned his Master of Health Informatics from UC Davis in 2014 and has authored/co-authored a number of data-related medical research publications for national journals. He enjoys programming with health data because of the sheer volume of records to be moved, with a focus on Data Warehousing, ETL Package Tuning, and Data Architecture/Data Modeling.
