PresentationJoel Champagne, "Pretty Big Data" in the Real World

Session Detail:  When recently dealing with a client who had a particular table with 330 million rows, I had a chance to sit down and do some tuning and suggest some design changes.  This session will condense what turned into two different sessions I scheduled with them to cover a) general tuning principals, and b) dealing with this "monster table."  I covered tools and techniques I used to improve performance on some key procedures, how I measured performance changes, how I ensured my changes would produce consistent results with existing logic, and more.  A good final result where everyone was happy helps prove that even "pretty big data" can be tamed!  Along the way, I'll be showing different tools, including my own tool-set:  SQL-Hero.

About Joel Champagne: Joel Champagne helps clients deliver large business solutions, mostly using .NET technologies, SQL Server, SSAS and SSRS. His specialty is in the SQL space, in particular data modeling and BI, as well as application frameworks and architecture. His company's flagship product, SQL-Hero, codifies many daily consulting tasks including code generation, tracing, reporting, and more.

We'll go over the basic architecture, learn about Map-Reduce, Hive, HCatalog and get our hands dirty in a virtual environment that will show how to get data in and out. We'll also find out about usage patterns, ETL/ELT, Data Hubs, Data Lakes and Data Refineries (that's a lot of data!). Presentation: Brent Ozar (Remote), How the SQL Server Engine Thinks

Session Detail:  When you pass in a query, how does SQL Server build the results? We'll role play: Brent Ozar will be an end user sending in queries, and you'll be the SQL Server engine. Using simple spreadsheets as your tables, you'll learn how SQL Server builds execution plans, uses indexes, performs joins, and considers statistics. This session is for DBAs and developers who are comfortable writing queries, but not so comfortable when it comes to explaining nonclustered indexes, lookups, and sargability.

About Brent Ozar: Brent Ozar specializes in making SQL Server faster and more reliable. He's a Microsoft Certified Master of SQL Server and MVP, and he has over a decade of experience. He coauthored Professional SQL Server 2008 Internals and Troubleshooting, created sp_Blitz™ and sp_AskBrent™, and he loves sharing knowledge at BrentOzar.com.

PresentationMickey Stuewe, "Techniques for Dynamic and Effective SSRS Reports" and "Keeping your SQL Objects Safe In Development"

Presentation 1: Techniques for Dynamic and Effective SSRS Reports Do you need a navigation system within your reports? Do you suffer from report sprawl, having hundreds of reports written once and disappearing into the reporting services catalog never to be executed again? Would you like to see one report take the place of fifty?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then join me in this demo heavy session. Not only will we address the questions above, but we'll talk about providing different layouts to the data in the same report, minimizing data based on the user's credentials, and even techniques for colorizing various parts of a report using VBA code. These techniques will help make your reports user friendly and help you look like a reporting superhero.

Presentation 2: Keeping your SQL Objects Safe In Development It has been a long established practice to maintain application code in version control. Versioning your application code allows you to view changes made by several developers working on the same project. It allows the team to get the latest changes in a consistent and reliable manner. It allows you to return your code to a prior state. It even acts as a safety net for when that day comes when your developer's computer won't turn on.

So, what about your SQL Objects? Join me in this demo heavy session where we will explore the benefits of versioning your SQL Objects and learn how it can enable streamlined database development without sacrificing control and visibility. We'll be using Red Gate's SQL Source Control tool for demos, and we’ll see how it integrates with your existing version control software to manage your SQL objects just like application code.

About Mickey Stuewe: Mickey Stuewe is a Database Architect. Her focus is on database modeling, T-SQL optimization, requirements gathering, and report design using the SQL Server stack. She is the recent recipient of the "Best New Community Voice" Tribal award from Red Gate. She blogs regularly at mickeystuewe.com and occasionally on other sites such as mssqltips.com. She recently co-authored her first book, SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services Blueprints. She has spoken at Dev Connections, SQL in the City for Red Gate, and various SQL Saturday events. She is also part of the committee that hosts the two Southern California SQL Saturday events each year. She is the President and Founder of a new user group in Irvine, CA called Business Intelligence Group, a PASS Community (BIG PASS Community for short). She makes her home with her husband Dan and their two girls in Southern California.
